Camera Bodies DSLR- Canon 70D The Canon 70D is a great DSLR which has many great features. My favourite feature on this camera is the video auto-focus. Many people will argue against me, but I believe it is truly legendary. I have had no troubles using this new feature. This is my main camera body. Canon 5D mii The Canon 5D mii was the first DSLR to shoot video. It is still a brilliant camera being the younger brother to the 5D miii. I use this camera when I'm trying to capture a really low depth of field shot, or a wide angle shot. These cameras are expensive and I don't expect everyone to have such beautiful cameras. Don't let your camera be your stumbling block. In my opinion any camera that shoots video is brilliant. Lens- Canon EFS, 18-135, 3.5-5.6, IS This lens I use on my 70D as an easy way to capture any shot. There is nothing worse than not getting the shot. Canon EF, 16-35, 2.8, L, USM. This lens is my main lens for my 5D mii. It is beautiful and captures depth of field amazingly. Carl Zeiss Planar, 50, 1.4. This is my lens for capturing really beautiful depth of field. I use it on my 5D mii. I am considering selling it as it isn't being used as much as I would like. Canon EF 70-200, 2.8, L, IS, USM. This lens is great for capturing footage from a subtle distance away from the subject. This is useful when shooting weddings and other events. Any lens you have is going to be great. Don't let your lens restrict your creativity. There are brilliant lenses out there, but any old lens will do. Equipment cannot stop your passion. Stabilisers- I use a tripod and slider, I got both off eBay. I got the fluid head tripod first, it is surprisingly good. My plan was to upgrade equipment after my first few jobs. This plan fell apart as I realised it was quite a capable piece of equipment. The slider which I also got from eBay isn't to bad. I wouldn't define it as quality equipment but it was a bargain for $100. The slider stays on the tripod which allows me to always use my slider. This is the best system that works for me. I hope you can find the best system for you. Here is the perfect example of not using perfect equipment. I use this equipment regularly and yet I still capture my shots. I cannot stress enough that you don't need the best equipment. Video Editor- Final Cut Pro X. I cannot explain how much I love this software. Every time I do a different shoot I find a new feature to edit with. In my opinion FCPX is the best video editor out there. It contains about every feature you need. From keyframes to an easy user interface. I rave about the user interface. How is it so good! Every other video editor has the worst interface. This doesn't make them bad it just makes them harder to use. And I love simplicity (K.I.S.S.). I run FCPX on my Apple MacBook Air, I cannot complain. Obviously it would be faster on a bigger computer but my MacBook doubles as a student laptop. It doesn't really matter what software you use. As long as it doesn't limit your creativity. Conclusion- Its all good and well to have the best equipment. But creativity is the best equipment. Don't let your equipment hold you back. Creativity cannot be bought. |
